SEO stands for search engine optimization. It is the name for many different for increasing website traffic. There are numerous techniques for achieving this, some tend to be easier/less time consuming than others. In a few words, SEO increases your presence on search engines which increases your traffic numbers. The goal for all SEO is to get your website to appear as number one for searches.

A fantastic first step is to ensure your blog is already optimized correctly. Make sure you use the most appropriate meta keywords and meta descriptions so that search engines can spider your website accurately. This only needs to be done once, once it has been set upcorrectly you do not have to do it another time. Whatever your website is about make sure your description, title and keywords all relate and target the area of interest. The meta title and description will also be shown in search engine results so make sure it is correct.

Secondly, it is important to write unique content. Copying content from other sources will mean you get marked down by search engines. Search engines are now highly developed and smart at offering users relevant content.

Once the website has been optimized correctly and you have written good content, the next stage is to build links to your site. Search engines determine how good your site is by how many inbound links the site has. I.e., your website has many more links than another, search engines will rank you higher and you will get more traffic. If you write content that is keyword rich then this will happen naturally but it can take a while. However, if you want to see faster results you might want to try the following techniques.

Firstly, submit articles to article directories. Sometimes you may find it challenging for your articles to be accepted as they get reviewed by reviewers. However, for every article that gets accepted, you will also get a couple of links. You may see SEO as a game - always trying to get good links from good sources.

Secondly, you can also build links to your blog through blog comments. Many forum admins and blog owners allow dofollow links to your site. Dofollow is the colloquial name for links that search engines will take notice of, compared with nofollow links. Nofollow was invented because SEO marketers used to spam/pay for links which meant you could dishonestly increase traffic. Nofollow means search engines will ignore the link and you will not get any SEO benefit from it. Try to find blogs that may allow you to link to your site. This benefits the SEO of your website, increase your online presence and will allow you to network with your fellow bloggers in the blogosphere. The comments should be genuine and relevant to the content. In most cases, writing something self-promotional (such as: "why not visit my home page ?") will not get approved and you will have wasted time and effort. You should always be a productive commenter.

Social book marking websites are also a good way for increasing your SEO. Do not spam your website too much though because the admins for the book marking sites will most likely block your website. But as with directories, if you bookmark your website then you will get you a link from a high quality site. If a website is well established, search engines will give you more kudos from getting a link from there. In other words, a link from a popular social book marking site will give your site more SEO benefits compared to a smaller website.

One last tip is to submit your website to online directories. They can be a bit troublesome to setup but if you get a link from a directory it will eventually improve your search engine rankings. A lot of the online directories are well established. However, submitting your website to a directory can get confusing because there are usually different submission options. It is common for directories to offer different free and paid submission options. Generally they will be: paid, free with reciprocal links and simply free. Paying for links can be quite expensive but you will get fast tracked into the directory. Many of the higher ranked directories only offer paid for submissions. A free link may take months to be approved (as there is often a long waiting list for websites to be accepted). Unfortunately, reciprocal links negate the SEO benefit of the link because they are not one-way. These may be beneficial for referring traffic but for SEO purposes these are not as useful. http://www.rxseo.net

The hints above should help your search engine rankings and improve your traffic. However you should also definitely be using services to monitor and report your SEO efforts and Internet traffic. This way you will be able to see what has the most benefit and what you can focus more on.
