SEO means Search Engine Optimization and is the name for techniques to increase website traffic numbers. There are numerous techniques for achieving this, some tend to be less time consuming than others. To give a brief introduction to what SEO is, it is basically how to increase your presence on search engines which in turn sends you more web traffic. Appearing as number one for specific keywords is frequently the goal.

A good first step is to ensure your blog is SEO optimized correctly. Make sure you use the most appropriate meta keys and meta descriptions so that search engines are able to spider your website correctly. Once this is done you do not have to worry about it again. Whatever your blog or website is about make sure your keywords, title and description are all targeting your area of interest. This is also the information that gets shown in search engine results.

Secondly, it is important to write unique content. Copying content from other sources will mean you get marked down by search engines. Search engines are now highly developed and smart at offering users relevant content.

Once the website has been optimized correctly and you have written good content, the next stage is to build links to your site. Search engines determine how good your site is by how many inbound links the site has. I.e., your website has many more links than another, search engines will rank you higher and you will get more traffic. If you write content that is keyword rich then this will happen naturally but it can take a while. To speed up this process you may want to try some of the following techniques.

Firstly, submit content to article directories. These can sometimes be tough to get accepted by because they want good content but for every article you write and submit to you can get two or more links back to your website. Search engines really like this. SEO is kind of like a game - trying to get quality links from quality places.

Secondly, you are able to manually build links to your blog through blog comments. Many blog owners allow you to link back to your blog with a dofollow link. Dofollow is the colloquial name for links that search engines take notice of, compared with nofollow links. Nofollow was invented because people would pay for links to their websites or spam lots of links. Nofollow means search engines will ignore the link which means you will not get any SEO benefit. Spend some time finding blogs and forums that will allow you to link your site? This benefits the SEO of your blog, increase your online presence and allow you to network with your fellow bloggers with the blogosphere. The comments ought to be genuine. In the majority of cases, writing something self-promotional (such as: "please visit my home page ") will not get accepted and you will have wasted time and effort. You should try to be a productive commenter.

Social book marking websites are also a good way for increasing your SEO. Do not spam your website too much though because the admins for the book marking sites will most likely block your website. But as with directories, if you bookmark your website then you will get you a link from a high quality site. If a website is well established, search engines will give you more kudos from getting a link from there. In other words, a link from a popular social book marking site will give your site more SEO benefits compared to a smaller website.

One last tip is to submit your website to online directories. They can be a bit troublesome to setup but if you get a link from a directory it will eventually improve your search engine rankings. A lot of the online directories are well established. However, submitting your website to a directory can get confusing because there are usually different submission options. It is common for directories to offer different free and paid submission options. Generally they will be: paid, free with reciprocal links and simply free. Paying for links can be quite expensive but you will get fast tracked into the directory. Many of the higher ranked directories only offer paid for submissions. A free link may take months to be approved (as there is often a long waiting list for websites to be accepted). Unfortunately, reciprocal links negate the SEO benefit of the link because they are not one-way. These may be beneficial for referring traffic but for SEO purposes these are not as useful. http://www.rxseo.net

The hints above should help your search engine rankings and improve your traffic. However you should also definitely be using services to monitor and report your SEO efforts and Internet traffic. This way you will be able to see what has the most benefit and what you can focus more on.
